Page 2 THE ROCKETEER Friay, October 7, 1966 Pep Pointers One Student Problem Remains Unsolved Ah, fans, but didn’t we launch the Rockets in time to cream those Comets of Halifax!?! THEN—We brought them back to earth to lasso the Henderson Bulldogs. Later the spot- light was on the players as we hailed a rip-roaring victory over Garner! We eagerly anticipated our fourth win as we played North ern Durham on September 30. Today, October 7, we play our Homecoming game against Chapel Hill. This game should really be a thriller!!! And let us not overlook the Junior Varsity and Freshman squads, still tender at heart, who will, through this year’s ex perience, harden into varsity material!! But fans, let us not give all the credit to our great football players! A major contribution comes from the lovely voices of Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleading squads. From the brass horns and pounding drums of our new RHS con solidated band there also rings the clear voice of victory. Yet beneath these embassies were the pounding hearts and un mistakable voices of YOU — Rockets Rout Early Opposition; Set Sights on Chapel Hill Wildcats The RHS Rockets opened the ’66 season by defeating the Hali fax County Comets in Halifax on September 2. A large crowd saw the Rockets pounce on a Halifax fumble on the opening kickoff and several plays later, quarterback Johni Blanks scored his first of three touchdowns by going over from the one. Roxboro’s second score came on a 29-yard toss from Blanks to wingback Tyra Hornsby. Blanks scored again on a short sneak before the half. Halifax got on the scoreboard before the half on a pass play. The Rockets led 27-7 at halftime. A twenty-one point second half gave the visitors a 42-7 vic tory over the crippled Comets. Second half touchdowns were scored by Blanks, fullback John ny Bradsher, and fullback Bob Newell. Sophomore Joe David Sparks booted six perfect extra points to tie a Roxboro record. A battle of defenses ended in a narrow victory for Roxboro at Henderson in a conference contest on September 16. The first half went scoreless with Henderson drives stopping close to the Roxboro goal line several times. The Bulldogs held field position on Roxboro most of the evening. Roxboro’s drive stalled on the the Henderson 18 in the third quarter, but Joe David Sparks kicked a three pointer for the game’s only score. Henderson threatened several more times before the game ended. Hender son kept possession of the ball for six minutes in the final quarter until .a drive fizzled on the Roxboro four. Henderson had eight cracks at a winning touchdown in the final minutes, four attempts from the fourteen and four from the four. How ever, the Rocket defense proved solid and walked off with a 3-0 victory. The fans won’t forget this cliffhanger for a while! The Roxboro Rockets chris tened the new ultra-modern Rox boro stadium September 23, by defeating conference foe Garner. Johni Blanks connected with end David Rudder for 82 yards and Roxboro’s first touchdown. Johnny Bradsher ran three yards for Roxboro’s second score. John ny Bradsher and Cleve Buchanan scored again for Roxboro be fore the half for a 26-6 lead. Long’s Tomorrows Styles Today The RHS Student Body!!!!!! Yes, it looks like a winning year for RHS!! We’ve really got the makings of three champion ship teams! RHS Appoints Davis To Coach Baseball As the Rockets zoom into ac tion again this year, a change can be noted in the athletic de partment. This change is the addition of Coach Reid Davis to the staff as head baseball coach, replacing former baseball coach, John Morris. A Durham native and a grad uate of Northern High School, Coach Davis completed a degree in physical education at UNC in 1962. From 1963 to 1966, he gained coaching experience at Southern High School in Dur ham. Coach Davis commented that the football program at RHS is well established and that the school when completed will be beautiful He also remarked that he is greatly impressed with the student body. Garner's only score in the first half came on an 82 yard kick- off return. The third quarter saw Bob Newell snag a Ram pass and race 27 yards for the T.D. Garn er then scored once more for a final of 34-13. A large crowd saw Roxboro open the home season right and Been wanting to pierce your ears? Let Mr. J. W. In a brand new school with almost 1100 students there are bound to be problems and chaos. Now after almost a month of school, most of these problems have been settled. However, the situation in the halls after lunch remains as one still to be solved. By examining this situation from both the administration’s view and the student’s view, a solution can be worked out. According to the school rules, a student who has finished lunch is to either remain in the cafeteria until the bell rings, stay in the commons area and be reasonably quiet, or stand outside the building. While the students have co- operated fairly well with these rules by staying out of the halls, they still seem to have trouble being reasonably quiet in the commons area after lunch. Some of the classes down the hall are being disturbed by the din. Lunch period is the only free period that students have dur ing the day and naturally they want to let off steam at this time and mingle with their friends. Louise Bradsher did and found that special raincoat that made her feel like a very special person. Since the lunch area is so close to class areas, there isn’t a solution that the administration can work out for the students now. But the students can show the administration the stuff they are made of by doing almost the impossible and keeping a tighter check on their steam valves during lunch periods. ★ ★ ★ Cage the Wildcats ★ ★★
